Suprapubic Tube Placement Options
A suprapubic tube is a type of urinary catheter. It empties the bladder through an incision in the lower abdomen instead of a tube in the urethra.
A suprapubic tube is a flexible tube that drains the urine from the bladder. The tube can empty into such as a bag (continual drainage) or plugged, allowing patient or caregiver to control when to empty the bladder (bladder cycling).
A suprapubic catheter is an option for people who cannot have or do not want a urethral catheter. This type of catheter has some advantages over a urethral catheter, but it also needs special care to avoid infections and other problems.
There are four techniques for placing suprapubic tubes by a trained surgeon:
- T-SPeC
- Percutaneous Trocar Punch Method
- Open Cystostomy (an open surgical operation)
- Lowsely Tractor
