Catheter Complications Comparison

Clinical studies support the patient benefits with the use of suprapubic tubes if bladder drainage is required for a duration greater than 4 days.⁴ 

• Up to 25% of hospitalized patients receive urinary catheters during their hospital stay ⁵ 

• 1/3 of all hospital UTI’s are attributable to use of an indwelling urethral catheter (CAUTI) ⁶

• 1 million catheter-associated UTIs occur each year in hospitals, responsible for more than 9,000 deaths ⁶

• Over 1 million serious urethral injuries occur each year in hospitals during the placement or removal of urethral catheters ^{7, 8}

• Suprapubic tubes have a significantly lower infection rate (as much as 87% lower than urethral catheters) ⁹
